Description
Summary:Set in the Pakistani community in south London, the film focuses on two youths, friends from schooldays. Johnny (Daniel Day Lewis) is a working-class white whose punkish friends are members of the National Front, a fascist group of thugs. Omar (Gordon Warnecke), a Pakistani lives with his left-leaning father (Roshan Seth), who spends most of his time in bed drinking vodka. Omar is given a menial job by his wealthy, unscrupulous uncle, and eventually inherits a rundown laundrette. Omar and Johnny quickly convert it into "a Ritz among Laundrettes," a guady, neon-lit palace called "Powders" complete with aquarium, video games, potted plants and piped classical muzak. While Johnny looks upon the laundrette as a life line on which to salvage his self-respect, Omar sees it as just the beginning step on the road to riches.
