Item Description: | The illustrated issue. Welch (entry 25.6) and Shaw & Shoemaker (entry 27682) posit the existence of an illustrated issue in addition to the issue without illustrations (Welch 25.5; Shaw & Shoemaker 27681) on the strength of a unique copy (imperfect) of v. 2 with six wood-engraved plates, held by the American Antiquarian Society. The plates are intended to face p. 22, 160, 180, 198, 302, and 325. In the AAS copy, the plate intended to face p. 325 is bound facing the title page. That plate is signed "Bowen" (i.e., Abel Bowen); the plate intended to face p. 198 is signed "B." Described by Welch as "a larger book than [Welch] 25.5," but the AAS copy is no more than an untrimmed copy. Vol. 2: vi [i.e., iv], 330 p., [6] leaves of plates. Error in paging: v. 2, p. iv misnumbered vi. |
