"The first edition of the first volume of this collection was printed, in four numbers, in 1812. A variety of circumstances ... has retarded the completion of this series ... It is now thought adviseable not to continue a division of the work into numbers ... It having been occasionally suggested, in the first volume of this collection, that its author was preparing a history of the state of New-Jersey, it is deemed proper here to add, that he has abandoned that work for want of encouragement. New-York, 20 June, 1814."--v. 2, p. [5].
Vol. 1 is a reissue of the 1812 edition (Shaw & Shoemaker 24580) with title page and prefatory address reset, and with the addition of a dedication to John Adams. Vol. 1 of the 1812 issue has title and imprint: A collection of American epitaphs and inscriptions, with occasional notes. By Rev. Timothy Alden, A.M. honorary member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, of the New-York Historical Society, etc. ... New-York: Published by Whiting and Watson, no. 96, Broadway. 1812. Alden's "Address to the patrons of this publication," p. [3]-6, is dated "Newark, N.J. 1 January, 1812."
