"The first edition of the first volume of this collection was printed, in four numbers, in 1812. A variety of circumstances ... has retarded the completion of this series ... It is now thought adviseable not to continue a division of the work into numbers ... It having been occasionally suggested, in the first volume of this collection, that its author was preparing a history of the state of New-Jersey, it is deemed proper here to add, that he has abandoned that work for want of encouragement.
