520 |a How do we take popular religion seriously? How do we listen to it in its own terms? This study is an exercise in theological dramatics as a way of approaching popular religion theologically. Specifically, it explores the Theo-dulâ (a Filipino theological dramatics) of the Salúbong (a popular religious drama portraying the doleful encounter between Jesus and Mary before the crucifixion and their joyful meeting on Easter morn). Setting the stage for an exploration in Filipino theological dramatics, this study first presents the Salúbong, a popular religious drama celebrated during the Holy Week in the Philippines. Then, building on von Balthasar's Theo-drama and Garcia-Rivera's Theodramatics, it proposes the Theo-dulâ as a theological approach to expressions of popular religion. Exploring the Theo-dulâ of the Salúbong, the study charts the possibility of encountering the divine mystery in a popular act of worship such as the Salúbong. As a religious drama, the Salúbong is a mimesis of life as it is and as it should be. Viewed through the Theo-dulâ and against the struggle-for-the-role/lakaran dramatic horizon, the Salúbong drama is like a mirror reflecting to us our human condition in need of salvation. Besides, it also acts like a window revealing to us a vision of salvation: a joyful, abundant communion of life. Finally, the Salúbong drama as mimesis of Christ's life offers us a way to achieve such communion. In the Salúbong drama, by participating in Christ's lakaran (sacred journey) with a steadfast lakas ng loob (inner strength) and a deep sense of damay (compassionate participation in experience of another), we bring our own dramatic lives into Christ's drama, so that our everyday drama may be transformed in God's drama of salvation.
