Description
Summary:"An important collection of Astronomical writings, mostly by Gaubil. Antoine Gaubil (1689-1759) entered the Society of Jesus in 1704, and went to China in 1722. He is regarded as one of the chief astronomers and Sinologists in China in the 18th century. He was closely involved in early Sino-Russian affairs and lived in Beijing for the rest of his life. Volume one includes the first translation of Tulisen's embassy to the lower Volga river entitled 'Relation chinoise contenant un itinéraire de Péking à Tobol, & de Tobol au Pays des Tourgouts' edited with notes by Gaubil. This extraordinary account had originally published in Chinese and Manchu in Peking in 1723. Tulisen was a member of a group of six chief emissaries sent by the Kangxi emperor to the Torgut Mongols. The first English version by Sir George Thomas Staunton, was published in 1821. The second volume (1732) contains a history of Chinese astronomy based on ancient Chinese texts, and the third a treatise focussing on Chinese methods of recording solar eclipses. Both parts have ms. notes by the Charles-Hippolyte de Paravey (1787-1871) in the margins. Paravey was a Sinologist, astronomer, and a founding member of the Société Asiatique.
