520 | 3 | |a Biblical scholars generally associate Christ's kingship in the Gospel of John with passion narrative, particularly with Pilate's question, "Are you the king of the Jews?" (John 18:33), and Jesus' response to Pilate: "My kingdom does not belong to this world" (John 18:36). The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate that the motif of Christ's kingship is present throughout the Gospel of John, namely in such passages as John 1:43-51 and 12:12-19, and that these passages lay the foundation for the culmination of this theme in the passion narrative (18:28-19:16a). My methodological approach is two-fold. First, I use narrative criticism to conduct a detailed examination of the three narrative texts-John 1:43-51, 12:12-19, and 18:28-19:16a-in order to find the thematic unity of Jesus' kingship within the narrative flow of the whole Gospel. Secondly, I employ an intertextual approach, which complements the narrative method by identifying echoes of Old Testament references to the Messiah within the Gospel texts. Though numerous studies deal with the kingship of Christ in the Gospel according to John, most of them focus on the passion narrative and very few consider the kingship motif throughout the entire Gospel. The significance of my study is to show how the motif of Jesus' Christ's kingship is present early on in the Gospel before reaching its climax in the passion narrative. In a widening circle from Nathanael's confession, through Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, to his crowning as the true King of the universe in the passion narrative, the theological theme of Jesus' kingship unfolds step by step in the Gospel according to John. | |
