With his works, especially the operas "Halka" and "The Ghost Castle", he offered consolation and support to the divided nation in the 19th century. In this first German-language biography, Rüdiger Ritter describes how the former landed aristocrat from the area of Minsk and Vilna, the overlapping area of Polish, Lithuanian and Belarusian cultures, later became the Polish national composer and director of the Warsaw Opera Theater. With his over 300 piano songs, Moniuszko is also considered the “Polish Schubert” - and just like his German counterpart, some of Moniuszko's piano pieces have the character of folk songs. Although Moniuszko was sometimes valued even more highly than Chopin by his contemporaries, Moniuszko remained little known in Western countries throughout his life - despite his studies in Berlin and his travels to France. To this day, his compositions remain an insider tip, testifying to the richness of European music history that still remains to be discovered beyond the beaten path. | ||
