Rogers received his M.A. from Oberlin in 1855 and became an ordained Presbyterian Minister affiliated with the American Missionary Association. He came to Berea in 1858 to teach, accompanied by Elizabeth Rogers who also taught. Rogers was a founder and an exile but returned in 1866 to incorporate the college and teach there.
