520 |a Violence and fear are so much a part of our lives that sometimes they merge with them. They creep into the social as well as into the individual and determine the history of both. Crime, for its part, seems to have become a privileged act not only to express violence, but also to experience fear. The criminal, in this regard, sometimes has the function of helping to define his opposite, the individual of good reputation. The current era favors an individualism of a new kind: the person threatened from all sides tries to protect himself by demonizing a particular group. Fortunately, today's world also produces individuals who, due to the weakening of old values, are more tolerant of others. This acceptance of others creates obstacles to certain forms of violence and promotes non-violence. This book leads us to examine the meanings of violence, fear and crime and how they relate to each other. It is intended for anyone interested in criminal and social justice. It highlights certain problems and indicates certain means by which conflicts can be resolved, including those experienced by the excluded. It affects social practices and the people who are called upon to manage them, to provide security and to eliminate fear. It is of great interest to criminologists, social workers, psychologists, educators, sociologists and political scientists.
